Summer Research Opportunities


UCSD is committed to providing Graduate and Undergraduate students with a wide range of summer research opportunities, both on and off campus. Interested students can visit the UCSD web pages of sponsoring programs to find out more about the opportunities briefly described here.

  • Amgen Scholars Program: 15 UCSD undergraduates and 15 college students from across the United States in life science majors will work in pairs under the guidance of a UCSD faculty member during this eight week, residential program. Amgen scholars will receive stipend support, on-campus housing and a boarding allowance. They will conduct research for 30 hours a week and participate in a GRE preparation program and present their at a mid-summer national gathering of Amgen scholars and at the UCSD Summer Research Conference.   • California Current Ecosystem Long-Term Ecological Research (CCE LTER) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): The CCE LTER site is an interdisciplinary group of scientists, students and educators working to understand and communicate the effects of long term climate variability on the California Current pelagic ecosystem, a major coastal upwelling biome (see http://cce.lternet.edu/ for more information). Summer research opportunities are available (paid positions, typically 10-12 weeks) for well-qualified and highly motivated undergraduates with interests in biology, chemistry, physics and/or computer science to work with scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in research related to CCE LTER projects (http://cce.lternet.edu/outreach/studentsreu/).

  • CAMP Summer Program: For UCSD students only Through its Summer Research Program, Academic Enrichment Programs offers students full-time research opportunities, independent study credit, and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). This is an intensive eight week program for UCSD students only that provides on-campus housing and stipend support provided by the McNair, CAMP, UC-LEADS, and UC Office of the President grants. Juniors and seniors with a 3.00 GPA and who plan to attend graduate or professional school are eligible.
     
  • Doris A. Howell Foundation Research Scholarship: For UCSD students only The Doris A. Howell Foundation is dedicated to making a long term, positive impact on women's health by funding research on critical issues, encouraging young people to pursue careers in the field of women's health, and promoting public awareness of the need to support these goals.
     
  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship offered by the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP_SURF): This 8-week program is designed for motivated minority undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career as a physician-scientist.
     
  • McNair Program: For UCSD students only Through its Summer Research Program, Academic Enrichment Programs offers students full-time research opportunities, independent study credit, and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).   • Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Regenerative Medicine, Multi-Scale Bioengineering, and Systems Biology: This exciting summer program provides undergraduate students access to state-of-the-art facilities, the opportunity to work with accomplished and experienced faculty mentors, and to participate in highly collaborative, cutting-edge research projects. In addition to the training students receive in individual research laboratories, extensive professional development opportunities will be provided through weekly workshops, an undergraduate research conference, panel discussions, and GRE preparation courses.
     
  • SDCSB Summer Research Fellowship: The San Diego Center for Systems Biology (SDCSB) Summer Research Fellowship is designed to introducemotivated undergraduate transfer students who plan to major in math, physics, bioengineering, or computer science to cutting-edge biological research. Open to incoming transfer students who will attend UCSD or SDSU. Fellows will receive a $3500 stipend for a ten-week (June – August) program. Fellows will be placed in a SDCSB affiliated laboratory and be assigned a senior member of the laboratory to function as their direct mentor.   • Summer Training Academy for Research in the Sciences (STARS): Funded primarily by the National Science Foundation, through the Office of Graduate Studies, STARS offers exciting eight week summer research opportunities for underrepresented students in the sciences, engineering, and math. The academy provides research experience, GRE training and workshops in preparation for the challenges of doctoral programs.
     
  • UC LEADS: For UCSD students only Through its Summer Research Program, The office of Graduate offers students full-time research opportunities and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  This is an intensive eight week program for UCSD students only that provides on-campus housing and stipend support provided by UC-LEADS, and UC Office of the President grants.  Juniors and seniors with a 3.00 GPA and who plan to attend graduate or professional school are eligible.
     
  • UCSD Undergraduate Research Scholarship: For UCSD students only All UCSD undergraduates in any major who will be enrolled the entire 2012-2013 academic year are eligible to apply. Students who plan on graduating mid-year in 2011-2012 may also apply, provided the project and final report are completed before graduation. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. The project must be completed while the applicant is a UCSD undergraduate. Applicants submit only one Research application, unless submitting different projects. The application will be considered for each scholarship indicated on the application form.
     
  • White Mountain Research Station: The UC White Mountain Research Station (WMRS) graduate-student research awards provide up to $2,000 per year to support living and travel expenses for graduate thesis at WMRS, or research based out of WMRS (i.e. in the White-Inyo Range, nearby eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains and Owens Valley). Budget requests may include room, board and laboratory expenses at WMRS and limited support for living in the field. Travel expenses may not include airfare and direct research expenses for equipment, supplies and campus-based activities are not supported.
