Summer Research Opportunities


UCSD is committed to providing Graduate and Undergraduate students with a wide range of summer research opportunities, both on and off campus. Interested students can visit the UCSD web pages of sponsoring programs to find out more about the opportunities briefly described here.

  • Amgen Scholars Program: 15 UCSD undergraduates and 15 college students from across the United States in life science majors will work in pairs under the guidance of a UCSD faculty member during this eight week, residential program. Amgen scholars will receive stipend support, on-campus housing and a boarding allowance. They will conduct research for 30 hours a week and participate in a GRE preparation program and present their at a mid-summer national gathering of Amgen scholars and at the UCSD Summer Research Conference.   • Cal-(IT)2 Summer Undergraduate Scholarship Program: The UCSD Division of Cal-(IT)2 supports this program for current and entering UCSD undergraduates. This program enables students to sample all aspects of an research career: full-time research in Cal-(IT)2 faculty labs for 10 weeks supplemented by a half-dozen meetings for students to learn communication and leadership skills, present posters, make oral presentations, and learn how to interact with the news media. Information and an application form are typically posted on Cal-(IT)2's Web site (www.calit2.net) in February-March each year for the following summer.  If you have any questions please email ugradprogram@calit2.net.
     
  • CAMP Summer Program: For UCSD students only Through its Summer Research Program, Academic Enrichment Programs offers students full-time research opportunities, independent study credit, and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). This is an intensive eight week program for UCSD students only that provides on-campus housing and stipend support provided by the McNair, CAMP, UC-LEADS, and UC Office of the President grants. Juniors and seniors with a 3.00 GPA and who plan to attend graduate or professional school are eligible.
     
  • Marine Physical Laboratory Summer Research Internship Program (MPLSRIP): The Marine Physical Laboratory Summer Research Internship Program offers undergraduate juniors and seniors the opportunity to work with Oceanographers who are currently participating in a variety of ocean sciences, with possible sea trips throughout the summer. Majors in Physics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics and Chemistry are encouraged to apply. This is a 10 week program open to US citizens only.
     
  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship offered by the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP_SURF): This 8-week program is designed for motivated minority undergraduate students who have completed their sophomore or junior year toward a bachelor's degree in biological sciences and are interested in learning about a career in biomedicine and the medical sciences.
     
  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Pharmacology (PHARMACOLOGY SURF): The Pharmacology Department at the UCSD School of Medicine offers a 10-week research and training program to undergraduate juniors who are interested in a career in basic research and in exploring Ph.D. training in the basic biomedical sciences. 
     
  • McNair Program: For UCSD students only Through its Summer Research Program, Academic Enrichment Programs offers students full-time research opportunities, independent study credit, and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). This is an intensive eight week program for UCSD students only that provides on-campus housing and stipend support provided by the McNair, CAMP, UC-LEADS, and UC Office of the President grants. Juniors and seniors with a 3.00 GPA and who plan to attend graduate or professional school are eligible.
     
  • Physics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Funded by the National Science Foundation, REU provides a summer research opportunity for undergraduates interested in various areas of physics. Participants will work with a faculty mentor, as well as other professors, researchers and graduate students on a research project.

  • Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Regenerative Medicine, Multi-Scale Bioengineering, and Systems Biology: This exciting summer program provides undergraduate students access to state-of-the-art facilities, the opportunity to work with accomplished and experienced faculty mentors, and to participate in highly collaborative, cutting-edge research projects. In addition to the training students receive in individual research laboratories, extensive professional development opportunities will be provided through weekly workshops, an undergraduate research conference, panel discussions, and GRE preparation courses.
     
  • Summer Training Academy for Research in the Sciences (STARS): Funded primarily by the National Science Foundation, through the Office of Graduate Studies, STARS offers exciting eight week summer research opportunities for underrepresented students in the sciences, engineering, and math. The academy provides research experience, GRE training and workshops in preparation for the challenges of doctoral programs.
     
  • UC LEADS: For UCSD students only Through its Summer Research Program, The office of Graduate offers students full-time research opportunities and preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).  This is an intensive eight week program for UCSD students only that provides on-campus housing and stipend support provided by UC-LEADS, and UC Office of the President grants.  Juniors and seniors with a 3.00 GPA and who plan to attend graduate or professional school are eligible.
     
  • White Mountain Research Station: The UC White Mountain Research Station (WMRS) graduate-student research awards provide up to $2,000 per year to support living and travel expenses for graduate thesis at WMRS, or research based out of WMRS (i.e. in the White-Inyo Range, nearby eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains and Owens Valley). Budget requests may include room, board and laboratory expenses at WMRS and limited support for living in the field. Travel expenses may not include airfare and direct research expenses for equipment, supplies and campus-based activities are not supported.
