SEA Holds its First All-Staff Retreat to Enhance Cluster Concept and
to Foster Divisional Cohesiveness
May 2003
A day-long staff retreat for all Student Educational Advancement
(SEA) personnel was held April 23 to foster a better understanding
of key SEA objectives among staffers, including the Educational
Continuum cluster concept, the Best Practices 70-20-10 approach and
other current and future activities.
With the newly introduced SEA Educational Continuum banner serving
as an appropriate backdrop, SEA staffers met in the Green Room at
UCSD’s RIMAC facility to discuss ways in which SEA’s various
outreach units could better pool resources and support each other
toward common goals. To further enhance discussion, staff members
were later divided into small and medium group sessions in locations
throughout RIMAC to brainstorm action plans toward these objectives,
including how technology can be implemented within the cluster to
expand and improve the range of student services through coordinated
activities and approaches. Each individual group later reported its
planning outcome recommendations before the entire retreat
gathering, and these recommendations were noted for future action.
SEA staffers also heard addresses by Shirley Weber, Ph.D., chair of
the CHUM Community Advisory Board, who spoke on the importance of
SEA becoming more actively involved in enhancing college preparation
for area students, and by Joseph Watson, Vice Chancellor of Student
Affairs, on the SEA cluster concept.
The retreat was directed and hosted by Loren Thompson, assistant
Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, who plans to make the gathering
an annual SEA event to further enhance cluster planning and
cohesiveness.
