SEA Participates in Best Practices Showcase, March 2003
Staff members from Student Educational Advancement (SEA) joined
other Student Affairs personnel and programs in participating in the
Best Practices Showcase sponsored by Student Affairs at
the Price Center in March.
The showcase allowed representatives of Student Affairs’ myriad
programs to come together to gain more knowledge of each other’s
activities, and to demonstrate how staffers are using Best Practices
concepts to accomplish their various goals and objectives.
SEA also used the opportunity to introduce its newly designed banner
that illustrates its Educational Continuum cluster concept. The
banner shows how the SEA cluster enhances students’ college and
academic preparation from elementary/middle school through high
school, undergraduate school and graduate school admission.
The banner, 35 feet long and six feet wide, features an arrow which
spans the length of the banner, and highlighted by the motto
“Student Educational Advancement – Making Educational Dreams
Reality.” The banner also includes photographs of students as they
participate in SEA programs at various educational levels.
SEA programs represented at the Best Practices Showcase were: Early
Academic Outreach Programs (EAOP); TRIO Outreach Programs;
Consortium of Community, High Schools, Universities and the Medical
School (CHUM); Academic Enrichment Programs (AEP); Office of
Academic Support, & Instructional Services (OASIS); California
Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP); Outreach
Communication Center (OCC), and Academic Connections Program (ACP).
The event also featured talks by Joseph Watson, Vice Chancellor of
Student Affairs, and a panel discussion on increasing the number of
ethnically underrepresented student at UCSD which included Loren
Thompson, assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Educational
Advancement; Rafael Hernandez, director of EAOP; David Artis,
director of AEP, and Patrick Velasquez, director of OASIS.
