WHAT: While most students will be taking it easy during Christmas holiday break,
more than 50 middle school and high school students will be
honing their
science fair entries during a hands-on Science Fair Mini-Camp in
laboratories at the University of California, San Diego. Under the
mentorship of UCSD lab experts and other professionals, students will be
receiving instruction in basic scientific procedures which will aid them
in preparing their entries for the Greater San Diego Science Fair school
competition scheduled this spring.
WHEN: Students from more than 6 area schools will convene at UCSD from 9 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. on: Friday, December 27, and Saturday, December 28.
WHERE: UCSD Bonner Hall Biology Labs, located on UCSD La Jolla campus at
the corner of Eucalyptus Grove Lane and Gilman Drive, and
at the UCSD School of Medicine, located at Gilman and Myers Drives.
DETAILS: Students are participants in a UCSD science enrichment program called
CHUM (Consortium of High Schools/the University, and the Medical
School) sponsored in partnership with the San Diego Unified School
District. Established in 1992, CHUM exposes low-income students in
grades 7 through 12 at seven area schools to a wide range of scientific
endeavors, including laboratory experiences and mentoring with UCSD
scientists. The aim is to increase student interest in science, medicine and
college admission, while enhancing their critical thinking skills.
PHOTO/ INTERVIEW OPP.: Photograph students and their science fair projects during hands-on
interaction with UCSD researchers. Interview students on their projects and why they are participating during Christmas holiday.
Speak with CHUM director Park Trefts on the effectiveness of the
CHUM program in enhancing the science academic performance and
preparation of first-generation college students.
