WHAT: While most students will be taking it easy during Christmas holiday break,
more than 70 middle school and high school students will honing their
science fair entries during a five-day Science Fair Mini-Camp at UCSD.
Under the mentorship of UCSD scientists, students will be preparing their
entries for the Greater San Diego Science Fair school competition scheduled
in February.
WHEN: Students from more than 6 area schools will convene at UCSD from 9 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m. on: Friday, December 21; Saturday, December 22; Thursday,
December 27; Friday, December 28, and Saturday, December 29.
WHERE: UCSD Basic Science Building laboratories, 9500 Gilman Drive (corner of
Gilman & Myers).
DETAILS: Students are participants in a UCSD science enrichment program called
CHUM (Consortium of High Schools/Undergraduate & Medical Schools)
sponsored by the UCSD Undergraduate School and the UCSD School of
Medicine in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District..
Established in 1992, CHUM exposes low-income students in grades 7
through 12 at seven area schools to a wide range of scientific endeavors,
including laboratory experiences and mentoring with UCSD scientists.
The aim is to increase student interest in science and college admission,
while enhancing their critical thinking skills.
