S.E.A. HOSTS ‘I’M GOING TO COLLEGE’ VISIT FOR 90
GEAR UP STUDENTS FROM PAUMA SCHOOL


More than 90 GEAR UP college prep students from Pauma School got a chance to experience college life for a day this month when they visited the UCSD campus to hear “kid friendly” college-style lectures, and to meet and lunch with faculty and UCSD undergraduates.

The visit, sponsored by Student Educational Advancement (SEA) with the California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP), featured lectures conducted by Andrea Chiba, Ph.D., of UCSD’s Cognitive Science Department; Richard Lieber, Ph.D., of Bioengineering; Alan Lechusza, graduate student in the Music Department, and Varda Levram-Ellisman, Ph.D., of Pharmacology. Welcoming remarks were conducted by Joseph Watson, Vice Chancellor of UCSD Student Affairs.

The visiting elementary students also got a chance to meet and talk with UCSD undergraduates Sara Corder, Ilham Bashir, Litza Ferrer and Monica Lozano who spoke to the youngsters on college life and academic preparation.

10:00 AM - Buses with Pauma GEAR UP fourth- through sixth-grade students,
teachers and parents arrive at RIMAC parking area across from
Athletic Field.

10:10 - Students assemble in designated area near entrance to RIMAC Green
Room to receive GEAR UP backpacks and other material for the
event.

10:20 - Michael Dabney of UCSD leads students, parents and teachers to
RIMAC Green Room for welcoming.

10:30-10:40 - RIMAC Green Room -Welcome remarks/Program orientation –
Linda Doughty, director of Cal-SOAP for San Diego & Imperial
Counties, and Coy Johnston, coordinator of Pauma Elementary
GEAR UP, and introduction of GEAR UP Pauma partners.

10:40 - Introduction of Dr. Joseph Watson, UCSD Vice Chancellor, Student
Affairs – Michael Dabney, director, News Media & Public Relations,
UCSD Student Educational Advancement.

10:40-10:46 - Dr. Watson’s Remarks in RIMAC Green Room.

10:46-10:56 –GEAR UP student break period

10:56-11:00 -Green Room lobby -Students assemble in color-coded groups to be
escorted to designated rooms for “kid friendly” college lectures
by UCSD faculty and undergraduates.

11:00-12:05- GEAR UP students rotate through college-style lectures in RIMAC’s
Green Room, Media Room and Fourth Floor Conference Room, with
each youngster attending two 25-minute lectures.

Lecture Schedule

Green Room – 11:00-11:25 AM – How the Brain Remembers: Andrea Chiba, Ph.D. –View an actual human brain and learn how the brain actually makes us smart! (For sixth graders)

Green Room – 11:30-11:55 – Do You Know What Bioengineering Is? – Richard Lieber, Ph.D. – Learn how scientists are making great things to help hospital patients get well again! (For fifth graders)

Fourth Floor Conference Room – 11:00-11:25 AM –How Much Do You Know About Native American Music? – Alan Lechusza, UCSD Graduate Student in Music – Learn what Native American music has in common with reggae and hip-hop? (For fourth-graders)

Fourth Floor Conference Room – 11:30-11:55 – What Does it Take to Become a Scientist? – Varda Levram-Ellisman, Ph.D. – Learn the skills and training needed to be a top-notch scientist! (For fourth graders)

Media Room (first floor) – 11:00-11:25 – Learn from a UCSD student what a typical college student does all day! (UCSD Academic Enrichment Program student) (For fifth graders)

Media Room (first floor) 11:30-11:55 –Keep on Track for College: Handy tips for kids on how to sharpen homework and test-taking skills! (UCSD Academic Enrichment Program student) (For sixth graders)

12:05-12:35 –Lunch/Restroom break (Students eat on the lawn of Athletic Field or
on second floor patio of RIMAC with UCSD faculty and
undergraduate speakers).

12:40-12:50 – Closing remarks by Linda Doughty/Coy Johnston in Green Room.

12:50-1:00 - Students depart Green Room for buses, and depart campus.
