More than 750 eleventh-grade students and their parents from San Diego and Imperial counties gathered at the University of California, San Diego this week to learn the rudiments of successfully applying to UCSD and other University of California schools. Called UC Prep, the free event was conducted by UCSD's Early Academic Outreach Program to prepare students and parents for the UC application process, which occurs in the students' senior year.

Students received information on UC admissions requirements, what high school courses they should take to be competitive for admission, and how to locate and apply for college financial aid. Parents attended workshops covering college admissions tests required, financial aid, Veteran's Administration benefits available for college, and issues dealing with first-generation college students and concerns of rural area students.

UCSD Chancellor Robert Dynes addressed students and parents on the importance of preparing early for college admission. UCSD is expecting to enroll 4,500 new freshmen this year.
